A massive black bear took in the sights in Hyattsville on Thursday morning, causing both fascination and fear for some homeowners who spotted it making the rounds.
Officials say that the bear was spotted early on Thursday, June 8 in the 4300 block of Oglethorpe Street, not far from DeMatha Catholic High School.
"Smokey the Bear in University Park?," the Anacostia Watershed Society posted on Instagram. "This black bear was seen roaming the neighborhood near the elementary school.
"Young male bears can stray far from where they are born to claim their territory."
The latest sighting comes on the heels of a black bear who found himself up in a Frederick County tree after enjoying a short jaunt through an area neighborhood.
Anyone who spots the bear in or around Hyattsville has been asked to contact the Department of Natural Resource Police by calling (410) 260-8888.
According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, "in Maryland, Black bears are located primarily in Garrett, Allegany, Washington, and Fredrick counties.
"Populations are highest in Garrett and Allegany counties, with bear numbers rising in the remaining areas. In the spring, black bears are often sighted in other areas of the state."
